General Cleaning + Maintenance

View Teknion General Cleaning Instructions Online or Below

  • General day-to-day cleaning, warm soapy water or non-abrasive household cleaners such as glass cleaner, Fantastik®, Formula 409® or commercially available solid surface cleaners will remove most residues. Rinse and towel dry the surface to prevent spotting, especially in areas with hard water.

Prolonged exposure, chemical dilutions and frequency of cleaners, disinfectants, and/or sanitizers used on the surface can cause degradation and/or discoloration.

  • Washing with warm water and soap often works. You can also use any mild household cleaners such as Windex, Formula 409, or Mr. Clean glass and surface cleaners.

  • All wood finishes are susceptible to scratches from rough and abrasive objects.

Teknion Wood’s finish is best cleaned by wiping the surfaces with a damp cloth, followed by a soft dry cloth in the direction of the grain. If the surfaces are really dirty, add a mild soap solution to the water, clean the surface and then wipe down again using a damp cloth to remove any soap residue, followed by a dry cloth to absorb any moisture left on the surface.

  • Wash surface regularly with mild soap and water. Dry with a clean cloth or soft paper towel to prevent soap streaks.

  • Clean with a damp cloth. Wipe with soap and water or with a glass cleaner. Do not expose your solid surface worksurface to harsh chemicals.

  • Wipe glass elements with a mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water. Use a clean, soft cloth, applying only light pressure. Rinse with clean water and dry by blotting with a damp cloth or chamois. Do not use window cleaning sprays, kitchen scouring compounds or solvents such as acetone, gasoline, benzene, carbon tetrachloride or lacquer thinner on glass elements.

  • Gently clean (do not scrub) with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth and soap and water solution. Do not use paper towels; their fibers can adhere to the finished surface. Do not use window cleaning sprays, kitchen scouring compounds or solvents such as acetone, gasoline, benzene, carbon tetrachloride or lacquer thinner on back-painted glass.

  • Use a wash solution that includes a mild soap and detergent, or a slightly acidic cleaning solution (vinegar and water). A product like Windex can also be used. Do not use harsh cleaners, abrasives or alkaline materials. Use clean, grit-free cloths, together with the wash solution to clean the glass. Care must be taken to ensure that gritty dirt particles picked up by the cloth do not scratch the glass. Do not use metal scrapers or tools to remove stubborn materials or stains. Immediately follow the washing with liberal amounts of clean rinse water (for best results use distilled water). Promptly remove excess rinse water with a clean, good-quality squeegee. Debris must be removed from the squeegee to prevent possible glass damage.

  • Gently clean (do not scrub) with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and 4: 1 mixture of water and vinegar. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners! Do not use paper towels; their fibers adhere to the etched surface and they will affect the protective quality of the Etch Sealer. Harsh scrubbing and/or abrasive cleaners may damage the protective sealer.

  • Wash surface with mild soap and water. Dry with a clean cloth or soft paper towel to prevent soap streaks.

  • Wipe with a well-wrung soft cloth moistened with light neutral detergent and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Be sure to wipe detergent completely, and wipe again with a dry cloth to dry. When using alkaline electrolyzed water to remove stains, spray directly on the stain and brush with a soft brush taking care not to damage the cloth. Then, wipe the moisture and stain to remove and wait for the cloth to dry. Do not use bleach.

  • Many fabrics can be cleaned with soap and water if “W” is listed as a cleaning code. See links below for instructions given by Health Canada and the CDC.

Bleach can be an effective disinfectant when used properly. Luum has many fabrics that are bleach cleanable. Important: Follow the correct “bleach to water” ratio listed in the specs. ALWAYS wipe or rinse with clean water after using a bleach/water solution. Follow the safety precautions and handling directions on the bleach product. Do not use bleach if it is not indicated as safe for use on your chosen fabric.

  • Use white vinegar followed by a suitable leather conditioner. Clean gently using a circular motion. Avoid saturating the leather with liquid. Never rub vigorously in one location. If required, treat with a leather conditioner to avoid drying out. Dry and polish the leather with a dry cloth. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.

  • Cleaning products remove germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces using soap (or detergent) and water. Cleaning does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and therefore the risk of spreading infection.

  • As per the CDC, "Disinfectants kill germs on surfaces. By killing germs on a surface after cleaning, you can further lower the risk of spreading infection. EPA-approved disinfectants are an important part of reducing the risk of exposure to COVID-19". Further information regarding cleaners and disinfectants can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Health Canada websites.

Many of Luum’s 30+ bleach and/or viricide cleanable and 30+ bleach cleanable and 80+ isopropyl alcohol sanitizable are made for vertical and upholstery application and feature plush piles and textural dimension, which can be utilized in a variety of settings with assurance of performance.

Each fabric has unique cleaning and care instructions. For more information please refer to the Luum website filters and resources page at luumtextiles.com. • According to the Association of Contract Textiles, an antimicrobial finish is a chemical treatment applied to a fabric to combat growth of disease-causing microbes, general bacteria, infectious diseases and various targeted organisms.

An anti-microbial finish on a textile inhibits the growth of bacteria but does not kill it. Antimicrobials also do not inhibit or kill the growth of viruses.

Antimicrobial products used on textiles are regulated by the EPA as pesticides. Luum promotes healthy environment, and as such, we do not promote the use of topical antimicrobial finishes.

In lieu of added antimicrobial finishes, Luum promotes the use of silicone products. Silicone, by its nature, does not support microbiological growth. Silicone is easily cleanable with soap and water, is bleach cleanable and can also be disinfected with healthcare grade wipes and sprays. Please see “Care of SIlicone Upholstery” on our website.

  • While bleach and water solutions have been shown to be effective sanitizers, the use of Isopropanol solutions may be a gentler method of sanitizing without the potential human health irritants of bleach. Over 80 Luum products can be sanitized using 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% purified water solutions.

Always take the proper safety precautions, read all instructions carefully and follow the label directions for safe, effective use. **Many isopropyl alcohol sanitizers also contain Quaternary Ammonium. These listings are intended for the use of products that contain isopropyl alcohol and water ONLY**

  • Over 50 Luum products can be sanitized using products containing Quaternary Ammonium. Many healthcare grade sanitizing products contain Quaternary Ammonium as the active ingredient. It is important to read the product directions to ensure that it is specified for use on soft or porous surfaces. Quaternary Ammonium products can have a negative effect on human health and surfaces. Our recommendation is to use the gentlest sanitizers first, before using products containing Quaternary Ammonium. **As always, test products in an inconspicuous area first and always rinse with clean water.***
